“Deeply emotionally engaged”
Since its founding in 2018, The Messiaen Quartet Copenhagen has touched and thrilled audiences with its imaginative, innovative and evocative programs.
Comprised of four acclaimed musicians, the Quartet takes as its inspiration Messiaen’s groundbreaking masterpiece, The Quartet for the End of Time. This iconic work’s unique combination of instruments offers unparalleled opportunities to explore genre-breaking repertoire, and to explore a musical world without boundaries.
The Quartet’s musicians, all consummate communicators, regularly forge a powerful connection with audiences, bridging divides and bringing people together.
The Quartet actively expands the repertoire and musical horizons of its instrumental configuration with its active and ambitious commissioning program, premiering numerous works by leading contemporary composers.
It has also fascinated audiences with innovative transcriptions of great works including Debussy’s Prelude à l’après-midi d’un faun and Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht, thus merging symphonic grandeur with chamber-music-like intimacy. The Quartet’s tireless exploration of wide-ranging repertoire has led to its being a regular presence on Danish National Radio (DR P2).
The Messiaen Quartet frequently collaborates with prominent musicians such as Caroline Widmann, Ray Chen, Malin Broman, Rick Stotijn, Saar Berger, as well as with the Marmén and Ziliacus Quartets. Composers who have written for the quartet include Márton Illés, Steingrimur Rohloff, Britta Byström, and Mattias Vestergård.
